Young parents social group
Young mum, Nika Wood, who has a five-month-old baby, would love to meet other new parents who are a similar age to her.
The 20-year-old North East Valley resident is stepping up as the new facilitator of the young parents group held at the Valley Project community rooms which provides an avenue for younger parents to connect, support each other and have fun.
It is loosely aimed at parents under 26 years.
Life for younger mothers can be different
Nika says that she goes to lots of different playgroups with her son, but often finds herself talking to mothers aged 30 and up. “They are talking about going back to work and their husbands work, whereas I’m studying and my husband is studying so it’s a lot different.”
“I would like to meet more mums my age to find people I can make friends with.”
Valley Project manager Tess Trotter says there has been a small community-led group for young parents running at the Valley Project for some time but the current facilitator recently stepped down. Now Nika has taken on the role to keep the group going.
“With a new facilitator and renewed energy, the group is hoping to attract a few new members to connect with. This isn't a play group, but more a social group, where children are of course welcome! It is entirely volunteer run and very relaxed and low key.”
