Women's art group for NEV
A Women's Art Group starting up in the valley will bring women who are new to Dunedin to learn and share art and craft skills while making connections with other women in the community.
Group facilitator Chloe Mackenzie says art is a wonderful way to express stories. “The visual nature of craft can transcend the barriers of verbal language, providing an excellent focal point to bring people together.”
After becoming involved with refugee resettlement last year through the Red Cross she began to think about additional ways she could help new Kiwis feel welcome in our community and had the idea to start a free art and craft group for women to share skills and build connections with others.
Arts and crafts have always played a central role in my life, says Chloe. From a young age she loved drawing and painting and recently has developed a passion for needle-felting, creating paintings and small sculptures from wool.
“I hope to bring this idea to life at the Valley Project on Tuesday afternoons. We will cover a range of art and craft topics, from needle-felt to painting and knitting.”
All women warmly invited to join
All women are warmly invited to come along and learn and share skills in a creative and relaxed environment. Whether they have no background of arts or crafts and want to start, or have a skill they would like to share, anyone is welcome.
Snacks and basic craft supplies will be provided and the topics of the classes are flexible and can be shaped by the interests of those attending.
