Time to spring into action

The annual great Valley Spring Clean is coming up on Saturday 21 September from 11am-3pm.

If you’re in the mood for a clear out but want to ensure you’re being responsible with what you no longer need, then the Spring Clean is for you.

This year, with support from Dunedin City Council, we are going bigger and better, especially in avoiding sending items to landfill.

The annual Valley Spring Clean is coming up and it's going to be bigger and better this year! There will be hard waste collection and re-purposing, weeding groups, e-waste collection, paint recycling, clothes swap and repair, a repair cafe for household goods and lots more . . .

We’ll have a team of dedicated volunteers assessing and diverting as much as possible away from the skip.

The Te Rōopū Mānaaki class from North East Valley Normal School will be running a clothes swap. Bring along your unwanted clean clothes in reasonable condition and take home some new outfits.

The clothes swap will be in the school hall and is for baby, children and adult clothes. There is no charge.

The Stitch Kitchen will also be running a Mend and Make Awesome workshop in the school hall. Bring along any clothes that need repair or could be repurposed along with a koha. Stitch Kitchen is supplying both the sewing machines and sewers.

The Valley Community Workspace is hosting a Repair Cafe at 11 Allen St to help tackle those broken or faulty household items. Volunteers will be on hand to help you repair the item or advise on the next steps.

Small electrical items can be handled on a case-by-case basis to be decided with the repairer you meet. You will have to stay with your item to learn or take part with the repairer to brush up on or learn new repair skills.

Weed warriors tackle weedy areas in the community during last year's spring clean event.

Join the weed warriors to tackle weeds on your own property, or team up with some neighbours or friends to clear out a weedy part of your neighbourhood.

Just like last year, it’s super-easy. Simply book a fadge (a tough 500L sack), fill it with weeds and have it taken away. Our fadges even come with a free kōwhai seedling. To book a fadge contact Simon on 021 468 406.

Please note we can only take ‘ecological’ or ‘aesthetic’ weeds. These are mainly broom, gorse, blackberry, old man's beard, banana passionfruit, Darwin's barbery, honeysuckle, buddleia and cotoneaster.

Community weeding will be happening behind Blacks Road Grocer and at a previous community planting site in Chingford Park. Register your interest to help out at either of these sites via our volunteer form or contact Simon if you would like to be part of a community weeding group.

We would love you to join us. Remember to bring along cash for e-recycling, the sausage sizzle and koha. There will be kid's activities happening with recycling games.
